n Operational Data Store (ODS) is a collection of data that supports an organization's need for up-to-date, operational, integrated, collective information. ODS is a purely operational construct to address a corporation's operational needs. Traditionally, data warehousing has focused on strategic decision making, such as reporting, OLAP, data mining, and forecasting, using large amounts of historical enterprise data. The use of active data warehousing has added a new dimension of tactical decision making-small-scope questions delivering information to the people and systems on the organization's front line.
ODS workloads are characterized as high-volume, tactical decision making requests. Such workloads are also referred to as on-line complex processing. Tactical decision making requests are more complex than transaction processing requests and generally consist of statements that use only a few rows in a few tables.

The data warehouse industry has developed ODS, usually presenting it as running on a separate platform, to satisfy tactical decision making requirements. Active data warehousing with Teradata Warehouse addresses the same ODS workloads. But Teradata Warehouse does this within itself -- without extra databases and systems.
